The story of Berlin's TV tower
Are you planning a trip to Berlin and would like to find out more about some of the city’s main sights? If there’s one place you can’t miss, it’s the TV tower!
Also known as the “Fernsehturm“, the German capital’s TV tower is one of the city’s symbols! At a height of 368 meters, it even figures on the list of Europe’s tallest towers.
The tower was officially completed in 1969. It was designed by architect Hermann Henselmann. Its surprising, almost unique design is one of the reasons why it is so much in the news. Its symbol is the sphere at the very top.
The sphere acts as a viewing platform. At a height of 203 meters, you have a bird’s-eye view of the whole of Berlin: Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag or Berlin Cathedral… You won’t miss a single one of the city’s most beautiful monuments.
Where is Berlin's TV tower?
Berlin’s TV Tower is located in the central Mitte district, at Alexanderplatz. It’s right in the heart of the German capital. Getting there is easy. Take the subway (U-Bahn) to Alexanderplatz station. This is served by several lines, including the U2, U5 and U8.
Once there, all you have to do is follow the signs. It’s really quite easy. You can also take the streetcar to Alexanderplatz, or a bus to the Alexanderplatz/Memhardstraße stop. All you have to do is look up to see where you are. It’s impossible to get lost.
Can you visit Berlin's TV tower?
Naturally, Berlin’s TV Tower is worth a visit! In fact, you can reach (as explained above) the observation platform, which stands some 203 meters high. A word of warning, however.
You have to pay to get in, and in summer, it’s not unusual for the wait to get to the top to be quite long. So book your ticket well in advance. As an added bonus, Berlin’s TV Tower houses a panoramic restaurant. So you can eat with a superb view.
How long does a visit to Berlin's television tower last?
A visit to Berlin’s TV Tower doesn’t take too long. In fact, you’ll need around 45 minutes to get up to the viewing platform, walk around it, marvel at the view, take some sumptuous shots, and then come back down. It’s a fairly quick visit, but the memories you’ll make are well worth it.
How much does a ticket cost?
If you decide to go through Treepeo, in collaboration with booking platform GetYourGuide, you can book a ticket to climb to the very top of the TV tower, at a very low cost. You’ll need 24.50eu per person to get there. Sounds expensive, but by booking here, you’ll get a better rate than when you actually go up.
How do I book a ticket for Berlin's TV Tower?
It’s easy to book a ticket to Berlin’s TV Tower. All you have to do is indicate the date of your visit and the number of people who will be attending. You can then pay for your ticket. A confirmation e-mail is sent to you once payment has been confirmed.
Good to know before you go
Strollers and pets are not permitted on site. In addition, the ticket purchased only includes access to the viewing platform. You can also expect security checks and queues at the elevator. Finally, beware of the weather! The view from the top is bound to be less pleasant in rainy, cloudy or foggy weather.
